Recent development in the land of Brooklyn Hockey.
Abe Start hockey league as of last year only used its ice for open skate and figure skating. A private firm stepped in and rented chunks of ice time out to use as they pleased. Probably with a firm with its own management, insurance and certified coaches or just one really organized guy like Ronny at Chelsea, no clue and rumors are abundant plus I know least since I just funnel ALL the information. That private firm then leased a part of its ice time for junior and high level teams to use the dead ice. Perhaps realizing a profit or on a whim ? the private firm set up a tiny league amongst city teams ie NYPD, FDNY, Parks people, etc? Where it affects us ? About a month ago, they set up a league with ten teams and no longer require affiliation to a union or to the cities bureaucracy. The high level teams rolled out, meaning that the great NYPD and FDNY skate there only for practice sessions and a few beginner teams rolled in. Current league consists of 10 teams playing 10 games plus playoffs with each skater paying $280 per for the season and no team fees. They made it their business to undercut Aviator. The current season is 5 games in. John from Kings Bay and Adam (the big Kings Bay ref) have close friends skating there and are interested in going there when this season is over. I don?t have any contact info of the private firm and calling the rink doesn?t seem to do much but if anyone gets through to who is running the league please let me know and let me know if any of the info I got is potentially off. Abe Stark (718) 946-3135. Let me know if you find anything more. |

That's good news, the rink is in coney island, which is closer than aviator for most of us. Do they have open hockey sessions?
I called that number several times and no one is answering. Can you find out when their games are so we can go and check it out? Also try to find out if they rent ice time. |

1. What i heard is that they dont have open hockey. Dont know anything for certain.
2. Ilya - reality is floating far above you... we dont know for certain if : A. They capped at how much ice time this private group has B. If they want more teams. C. If they are going to stay open and if they are profitable. D. All other issues and ideas that Eugene Ross etc are comming up with, lets test the waters first. Who knows in what condition that rink is in! 3. Since you guys havent gotten through to the rink I'll call Adam tomorrow and see who has this info. If anyone is radical or lives really close (ross)- do you want to just stop by and ask? |
